IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo will return on Sunday (22), with Port City Colombo named as the official presenting and venue partner. The event is organised by Serendib Multisport.
The partnership brings the international endurance event to the centre of Port City Colombo, aligning the race with Sri Lanka’s efforts to position itself as a destination capable of hosting internationally recognised sporting and lifestyle events. The organisers state that the decision to base the race at Port City Colombo reflects a strategy to showcase the city’s infrastructure, planning standards and operational readiness.
Port City Colombo, developed as a multi-service Special Economic Zone, spans 269 hectares of reclaimed land and is positioned as a financial, business and lifestyle hub in South Asia. Hosting the race is intended to demonstrate the city’s capacity to support large-scale international events requiring high logistical and organisational standards.
According to organisers, IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo 2026 is expected to contribute to Sri Lanka’s sports tourism sector. Athletes from more than 49 countries typically attend the event, often travelling with support teams and family members and staying in the country for several days. The event is also expected to generate wider economic activity linked to tourism, services and local businesses.
The race course at Port City Colombo includes a 1.9-kilometre swim in the 101-hectare sheltered lagoon, protected by a 3.2-kilometre offshore breakwater. The cycling segment covers 90 kilometres along newly developed roadways, followed by a 21.1-kilometre coastal run within the Port City area.
Organisers also highlighted environmental considerations, noting that Port City Colombo’s emphasis on blue and green spaces aligns with IRONMAN’s global sustainability framework. In addition, the partnership aims to encourage broader community engagement in endurance sports and healthy lifestyles, while creating opportunities for small and medium-scale enterprises linked to tourism.
Commenting on the partnership, CHEC Port City Colombo Deputy Managing Director Thulci Aluwihare, said the event demonstrates Port City Colombo’s role in hosting international-standard events while supporting community engagement and development.
Serendib Multisport Director Yasas Hewage, said the collaboration reflects Sri Lanka’s potential to become a regular destination on the global endurance sports circuit.
In addition to the race, Serendib Multisport will host the KAYA Wellness and Active Lifestyle International Expo at Shangri-La Colombo from 19 to 22 February, offering participants and visitors access to related wellness and lifestyle activities.
