How did you get into modelling?
I worked at a local TV station on a show called Party Crashers. I met my agent there, and he asked me if I was interested in this field and I said I was. It took me about two months of training under him and that’s when I walked my first show.
How did you decide that this was the job for you?
When I started working with my agent, Brian, I was flying for SriLankan Airlines. I realised I was happier and more at ease with myself when I was walking down the ramp as opposed to when I was on an aeroplane. It took me a few years to realise that this is what I wanted to do. There’s no point in how much money you make if you’re not really happy with how you’re making it. I gave up flying back in August last year and I’ve never looked back since.
What challenges did you face along the way and how did you overcome them?
I was thinking about what my diet was going to be and how to adhere to it. The diet was definitely an issue. I balanced my diet with a strict workout regimen and stuck to it and pulled through. I also had to make sure I got my walk and poses perfect, which I learned over time. It took me about three years to work on it, and I’ve still not mastered it, but I’ve gotten much better.
What steps did you take in order to reach your current position?
I was recruited, did my training, and then jumped right into it. I attended Brian’s two-month course – so from January to March that year, I did my course and then, in March, I began modelling. Every day is a new day and every challenge is a new challenge. But the only factors that played a role in my career were Brian’s course and a lot of time spent at the gym.
What do you love the most about your job?
I don’t consider modelling to be my job. I love being on the ramp and posing, taking pictures, and getting fancy clothes. I enjoy meeting new people and designers and engaging with hair and makeup stylists. I adore everything about it. It is not a typical 9-5 job and I enjoy everything about it.
What advice would you give youngsters who wish to follow in your footsteps?
You are not defined by any standard. It’s not about your genetics; it’s not about how society treats you. It’s not about how muscular or athletic you are, nor about how bad or good your fashion sense is. It’s just about how badly you want it. After that, everything is yours.
Anything else you would like to add?
It’s because of my modelling career that I was able to expand into becoming a social media content creator. Modelling is a gift that keeps on giving. I’ve been able to meet many amazing people along the way and have been presented with many opportunities. If you really want it, despite how the world might tell you that you can’t – if you push and believe in yourself, despite what everybody else says, you will make it. It’s just a matter of time.
