The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) is set to launch awareness programmes for villagers residing near the Peradeniya University, in response to repeated leopard sightings in the area.

Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (10), DWC Director General Ranjan Marasinghe said the presence of leopards in the Hanthana area is an ongoing issue, acknowledging that while it is not possible to completely prevent the animals from entering human habitats during certain times of the year, the Department's focus remains on educating the community regarding the issue. “We don't know to what extent the University students need awareness; however, we will be primarily focusing on the villagers,” Marasinghe added.

When contacted by The Daily Morning yesterday (10), a source from the University indicated the situation has temporarily subsided, with no new adverse incidents reported. “A cow and a dog were found dead near Uda Peradeniya. No new incident has been reported. But, the caution notices are not lifted yet,” the source added.

Last week, the University experienced multiple leopard sightings within its premises, alongside a number of attacks on farm animals reported at the Veterinary Teaching Farm. In light of these developments, the University administration has formally advised all students and staff to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions while moving around the Campus. Members of the University community have also been advised to avoid walking alone, particularly during the early morning, late evening, or night hours, and to immediately report any leopard sightings to the University Security Division. Extra caution has been urged in and around the said Farm and nearby areas.
