Priyantha Weerasooriya, the first officer in Sri Lanka’s 158-year police history to rise from constable to Inspector General, officially assumed duties as the 37th IGP at Police Headquarters.
Appointed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake with Constitutional Council approval, Weerasooriya pledged to uphold police honor, discipline, and high standards.
A law graduate and decorated officer with 36 years of service, he has held key positions and served in UN peacekeeping missions in East Timor and Haiti.
