President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his special message today (1), marking both World Children’s Day and Elders’ Day, reaffirmed the Government’s strong commitment to safeguarding the rights, wellbeing, and dignity of children and elders two groups that make up a vital part of Sri Lanka’s population.

Highlighting children as the future of the nation and elders as the pillars of wisdom and contribution, the President emphasized that society carries a collective responsibility to protect and empower both generations.

The President outlined several measures already taken by the Government, including ensuring equal access to education, nutrition, healthcare, and protection from abuse and discrimination.

He stressed that no child of school-going age should be deprived of education due to ethnicity, financial background, or any other factor.

Special attention in the national budget has also been directed toward children with developmental challenges, such as autism, by enhancing healthcare, education, and support services.

The President also praised the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs for commemorating World Children’s Day under the theme “Protect with Love, Empower to Conquer the World”, which, he said, provides guidance for strengthening child welfare in the years ahead.

On elders, President Dissanayake extended heartfelt gratitude for their lifelong contribution to Sri Lanka’s progress and stressed the importance of treating them with the respect and dignity they deserve.

This year’s dual observance serves as a reminder of the Government’s pledge to foster an inclusive society where the young are empowered to shape the future and the elderly are honored for shaping the past.
