The formation of the new Beruwala Urban Council, scheduled for today (19), has been temporarily halted following a petition filed by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) councillors.
4 of the 6 SJB members alleged they had not received official notification of the meeting and subsequently sought legal intervention.
The Court of Appeal ruled that the council's establishment may only proceed once proper notice has been issued to all councillors.
A notice from the Municipal Commissioner later confirmed the postponement of the inaugural session. The recent Local Government (LG) election saw the Independent Group win 7 seats, SJB 6, and the NPP 3 in the Beruwala Urban Council.
