The United National Party (UNP) has raised concerns over the depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee and questioned the government’s economic approach.
In a statement, the UNP claimed the rupee had depreciated from Rs. 292 to Rs. 354 against the US dollar over the past 20 months.
The party alleged the decline was due to the absence of a clear economic plan and reduced foreign reserves.
The UNP warned that rising costs of living would increase pressure on the public despite potential gains for export sectors.
It also cited global factors, including shipping disruptions and market conditions, as risks to Sri Lanka’s export performance.
