Sri Lanka moves forward with plans to establish a national film school

Sri Lanka has taken initial steps toward creating a National Film School, with early discussions held under the Parliamentary Caucus on Arts and Cultural Affairs.

The aim is to develop an institution that offers practical, internationally aligned film education.

The meeting, chaired by MP Jagath Manuwarna, brought together officials from the National Film Corporation, the Sri Lanka Foundation, the State Cinema Advisory Board, film professionals, academics, and industry representatives. Participants emphasized the need for hands-on training and adherence to global standards in film education.

Although the idea has been discussed for years, implementation is now gaining momentum. The caucus plans to leverage existing resources from the Sri Lanka Foundation and the National Film Corporation, with a technical committee established to develop the legal framework, secure approvals, and oversee initial steps.

The committee includes key stakeholders such as MP Jagath Manuwarna, NFC Chairman Sudath Mahadivulwewa, Sri Lanka Foundation Chairman Prof. Seetha Bandara, and others from the film sector. Additionally, a separate academic planning committee was formed to develop curricula and academic activities.

Discussions also covered reviving the Colombo International Film Festival and constructing a modern film studio complex near Colombo, with plans to identify suitable land and secure funding for these initiatives.
