  • Cab. Spokesperson also claims no satellite named China SAT 12, cites ITU info.

The Government reiterated that none of the available official information indicates the existence of a satellite named Supreme SAT sent by Sri Lanka.

This was noted by the Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa during the weekly Cabinet press briefing held yesterday (12).

Adding that the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) handles the coordinating aspects of sending satellites, Dr. Jayatissa explained that it has assigned two spots for orbit for Sri Lanka. He added that although Sri Lanka looked into the matter with the ITU, as per the available information, there is no satellite registered under Sri Lanka in the designated spots, and that there is also no satellite named Supreme SAT 1.

Referring to the claims that the satellite’s name was changed to China SAT 12, Dr. Jayatissa said that although there are several satellites with the name China SAT, there is none named China SAT 12 including in the two said spots.

According to Dr. Jayatissa, the process of getting approval from the ITU to send a satellite takes three to seven years. He noted that in Sri Lanka, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission holds the ITU’s membership.
