'Ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Member of Parliament (MP) Chamal Rajapaksa has recently called for the implementation of the Janasabha (village council) system within the Hambantota District.

This observation had been made at the Hambantota District Development Committee meeting this month by Rajapaksa, who is the Chairman of the committee. 

The proposed Janasabha system has been implemented at present in the Mirijjawila Grama Niladhari Division as a pilot project and the system, according to Rajapaksa, is a success.

Janasabha Secretariat Acting Director General Akalanka Hettiarachchi had also attended the committee meeting.

The Janasabha system was proposed by former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and he has been playing an active role in formulating the programme with the blessings of President Ranil Wickremesinghe. An office has been set up under the President’s Office to formulate and implement the Janasabha programme.
