Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Dr. Anil Jasinghe stated that Sri Lanka has not detected any new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Specimens tested in May 2025 confirmed only the presence of previously known sub-lineages, with no signs of novel mutations or increased disease severity.
Dr. Jasinghe acknowledged a slight increase in COVID-19 cases during May 2024 and again in May 2025, in line with seasonal trends and global patterns. However, the overall positivity rate remains low, averaging around 2% this year.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge the public to maintain respiratory hygiene and avoid panic. Individuals showing symptoms should manage them at home unless they experience breathing difficulties, in which case medical care should be sought.
