The Government has approved the transportation and exhibition of sacred relics at the Maha Vipassana Meditation Centre in Texas, United States.
The decision follows a request made by Ven. Rathnaguna Thero and Ven. Pannakara Thero of the Maha Vipassana Meditation Centre, seeking to host the revered relics from 2 May to 10 May, 2026.
The relics include historically significant objects such as the Sacred Relics unearthed from the Neelagiri Stupa in the Ampara District, dating back to the 1st–2nd centuries BC; the Hair Relics donated by the Government of Thailand, currently enshrined at Gangaramaya Temple; and other sacred relics housed at Mahiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya.
These relics hold deep religious significance and are objects of profound reverence among the Buddhist community in Sri Lanka.
The Cabinet of Ministers, upon the recommendation of the Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, approved arrangements to facilitate the transport and display of these relics abroad.
