Cricket Foundation of Mahinda: Annual cricket tourney to be held

05 Mar 2025

The Cricket Foundation of Mahinda College Annual Cricket Tournament will be held on 8 March in Galle, for the second consecutive year, the organisation announced.

Issuing a statement in this regard, the Cricket Foundation of Mahinda College (CFMC) stated that its Annual Cricket Tournament was established based on the vision of old Mahindians who have upheld the standards of cricket at Mahinda College for over 120 years. With their experience at both national and international levels, this tournament aims to provide young cricketers with a unique opportunity to connect with and learn from past players, fostering skill development and enhancing the overall quality of cricket at Mahinda College, the organisation noted.

CFMC anticipates that the tournament will bring together past Mahinda cricketers from different generations, giving them a chance to connect, share experiences, and relive memorable moments. It will also serve as a fundraiser to support the future development of Mahinda Cricket.

Cricket Foundation of Mahinda College is an organisation of past cricketers of Mahinda College, Galle. In a statement, CFMC claimed that its main objectives are to develop cricketing infrastructure and disseminate technical expertise to enhance the cricketing skills of young talent. This organisation was initiated in 2001 as an idea of a few past cricketers. First President of CFMC was Rear Admiral Ivan Kariyawasam (Retd.) who was the captain of the 1972 team. Thereafter, Upul Sumathipala and Kumar Samarasingha held the position of President, and current President is Channa Weerasinghe.

CFMC stated that it has done various activities to improve and enhance cricket at Mahinda for the last 25 years, including setting up the indoor wicket, donation of college blazers, maintenance of the college cricket ground with the help of Sri Lanka Cricket and School Development Society, provision of cricketing materials every year, donation of a bowling machine, conducting various workshops and seminars for players.

CFMC statement also noted that it has organised a tour for 2007 Under-17 all-Island champions team and 2008 big match winners to India in May 2008. All these activities are conducted by members of the CFMC with the support of well wishers and past Mahindians from all over the world.
