Spicing up Kandy city

  • A memorable culinary experience at Hideout Lounge

Perched against the stunning backdrop of Kandy’s iconic lake and mountain range, Hideout Lounge Kandy is not your typical hill-country eatery. From the moment we stepped into the bohemian-inspired space, it was clear this wasn’t just another restaurant – it was a lifestyle destination.

Thoughtful touches, like warm wooden interiors, ambient lighting, and a layout that seamlessly frames the picturesque mountains, made us feel worlds away from the city’s hustle. According to founder Lankanath Don, this was the intent: “We wanted to create a space that didn’t feel like Kandy – a sanctuary where people could relax, connect, and enjoy something unique.”

Our journey began on a crisp evening after a long drive, and the venue’s inviting atmosphere was the perfect antidote to road fatigue. With a cappuccino in hand, comfortingly warm and perfectly brewed, we settled into the evening. What followed was a culinary experience that pushed boundaries, blending innovation, bold flavours, and a clear dedication to quality.

Small plates with big flavours

The appetisers set the tone for the night. We began with the chicken karaage, a flawless rendition of the Japanese classic. Crispy, tender, and served with a chilli treacle mayo that added a hint of Sri Lankan flair, it disappeared from the plate far too quickly. Equally impressive were the jack or breadfruit bombs – golden spheres of crispy perfection paired with a spicy pumpkin purée. The balance of textures and the earthy undertones of the jackfruit made this a standout dish.

Then came the Hideout loaded manioc, which showcased a creative twist on a local staple. The cassava chips were light and crispy, the cheese sauce decadent, and the ghost pepper salsa provided just the right amount of heat. For those less inclined toward spice, a milder version is available on request. These dishes weren’t just appetisers – they were a prelude to the artistry we were about to witness.

An affair to savour

Dinner at Hideout was nothing short of phenomenal. It’s rare for a restaurant to not only meet but exceed expectations, yet Hideout managed to do so spectacularly. The menu reflects the restaurant’s mission to blend Sri Lankan flavours with international inspirations, and we couldn’t wait to dive in.

The mango coconut prawns were an immediate hit. Cooked in their shells, the prawns were perfectly tender, infused with a sweet-and-spicy coconut sambol that lingered on the palate. This dish, served with white rice and crispy prawn crackers, captured the essence of Sri Lanka while elevating it to fine dining.

Another highlight was the snapper with mango-pineapple salsa, which our steward recommended. The skin-on snapper was cooked to perfection, flaky and moist, and the salsa – a fresh mix of mango, pineapple, coriander, and bell peppers – brought a refreshing sweetness that balanced the dish beautifully. It was clear that Hideout’s kitchen prioritises fresh ingredients and bold flavours.

Not every dish hit the mark, though. The pork chop, while generously portioned, suffered from an overpowering charred flavour. The crushed potato, intended as a side, didn’t quite manage to redeem it. But any disappointment was fleeting, as the herb-crusted beef steak quickly stole the spotlight. Served with savoury sweet potatoes and a peppery chimichurri, the dish showcased precision and restraint, letting the quality of the Australian beef shine through.

The homemade hummus with prawns – another absolute home run of a dish – was a simple yet delicious offering. The creamy hummus paired wonderfully with the chilli-garlic prawns, creating a dish that was both hearty and satisfying.

Dessert was no less spectacular. The lava cake – with its molten centre – was a decadent delight, paired perfectly with creamy vanilla ice cream. But it was the coconut crumble and salted pineapple ice cream that truly won us over. Made in-house by Island Cream, this dessert offered a harmonious mix of textures and flavours, with the salted pineapple providing a unique, almost nostalgic burst of tropical sweetness.

Breakfast: A mixed bag

After spending the night in Kandy, we returned to Hideout Lounge for breakfast the following morning. The presentation was impeccable – breakfast at Hideout looks like something straight out of a food stylist’s portfolio. However, taste-wise, the experience was more hit-and-miss.

The fairy pancakes – pink, peanut buttery, and topped with fresh fruits and blue sauce – were whimsical and packed with antioxidants. For the kids (or the kid in you), this dish would be a delight. But the eggs benedict failed to deliver. The poached eggs were overcooked, the hollandaise overly acidic, and the balance we craved was missing. On the other hand, the green shakshuka, while untraditional, offered an interesting take with its mix of spinach, basil, and green peas.

We couldn’t leave without trying the blueberry butterfly smoothie bowl, which was a vibrant bowl of frozen bananas, blueberries, and granola. It looked almost too pretty to eat and tasted as refreshing as it appeared.

Liquid creativity

One of Hideout Lounge’s crowning achievements is its beverage menu. Crafted by their in-house mixologist, the drinks are vibrant, inventive, and meticulously balanced. From tropical infusions to strong classics with a Sri Lankan twist, the drinks perfectly complemented the food. Lankanath emphasised their focus on quality: “We wanted the drinks to be as memorable as the food. They’re all about bold flavours and creativity.”

The Hideout experience

While the food and drinks took centre stage, the overall experience at Hideout Lounge is what makes it exceptional. The bohemian interiors, panoramic views, and thoughtful details combine to create an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and laid-back. The team, made up of over 30 local staff, deserves a special mention for their attentive and warm service.

Special dining events, live music nights, and seasonal parties make Hideout Lounge a cultural hub in Kandy. Their soundproof club, hidden behind a discreet entrance, ensures that even after hours, guests can enjoy nightlife without disrupting the tranquillity of the area.

Hideout Lounge Kandy is a place that defies expectations. While not every dish was flawless, the highlights far outweighed the misses, and the overall experience left us thoroughly impressed. It’s not just a place to eat – it’s a place to linger, connect, and soak in the best of what Kandy has to offer.

Hideout Lounge is the perfect retreat. Just be sure to stay for dinner – it’s where the magic truly happens.
