Sri Lanka installs thermal cameras on trains to stop elephant deaths

12 Feb 2026 | BY Staff Writer

Sri Lanka Railways has started installing thermal-sensing cameras on locomotives to prevent elephants from colliding with trains.

This initiative, part of a high-level government effort led by Minister of Environment Dhammika Pathabandi, aims to detect elephants in advance and enhance safety along busy tracks.

The cameras, fitted on trains operating in elephant-prone areas like Trincomalee, will undergo testing over the next week.

A new underpass in Kassikotte is being constructed to provide elephants with a safe crossing point, further supporting wildlife conservation efforts.
