SJB’s Chaminda Wijesiri resigns as MP

The main Parliamentary Opposition party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB) Badulla District Parliamentarian Chaminda Wijesiri has submitted his letter of resignation as an MP.

Wijesiri revealed this while speaking during the first parliamentary sitting of this year, which commenced at 9.30 a.m. yesterday (9). 

Thus, in accordance with Section 64(1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981, Secretary General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera has informed the Chairman of the Election Commission in writing that the seat of Wijesiri in the ninth Parliament is vacant since yesterday.

Nayana Wasalathilake is next in line on the SJB’s preferential vote list to fill the parliamentary seat which fell vacant following the resignation of Wijesiri.
