In a landmark move aimed at strengthening the national economy and positioning Sri Lanka as a premier destination for remote work, the Department of Immigration and Emigration has introduced a new Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) category for foreign professionals.
The Digital Nomad Visa is open to foreign professionals and entrepreneurs who wish to reside in Sri Lanka while working remotely for clients or businesses based overseas.
Foreign nationals over the age of 18, along with their spouse and dependants, are eligible to apply under this category.
Applicants must either be employed by, or own, a business registered outside Sri Lanka. The principal applicant is required to remit a minimum of $2,000 per month in foreign currency to Sri Lanka. Where there are more than two dependants, an additional $500 per month must be remitted for each additional dependant.
Applicants are also required to submit several supporting documents, including police clearance reports, proof of international health insurance, and a recommendation from the Ministry of Digital Economy.
The visa carries an annual fee of $500 per person and is valid for one year. Upon renewal after the first year, tax registration with the Department of Inland Revenue will be mandatory.
Further information and application forms are available on the official website of the Department of Immigration and Emigration at www.immigration.gov.lk.
