The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the appointment of a special committee to study and propose new laws to secure the voting rights of Sri Lankan citizens living abroad.
This move addresses a long-standing issue, as current election law does not provide a mechanism for overseas citizens to cast their votes.
The committee, to be led by the Ministry of Public Administration, will include officials from the Elections Commission, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other key institutions.
The decision follows the precedent set by several other Asian countries, including India, Bangladesh, and the Philippines, which have already established legal frameworks for offshore voting.
