The Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Sri Lanka, Semih Lütfü Turgut, emphasised that Sri Lanka has the potential to emerge as a high-performing nation on the global stage by focusing on innovation and leveraging its natural advantages.
Drawing on examples from global history, Ambassador Turgut pointed out that many successful nations have achieved remarkable growth by “punching above their weight” through strategic use of their comparative advantages. He stated, “Innovation is the multiplier.
It allows small nations to amplify their strengths,” highlighting Sri Lanka’s strategic geographic location, rich cultural heritage, and expanding entrepreneurial spirit as key assets that position it for a breakthrough growth story.
He further explained that global trade is not a zero-sum game. “Commerce is not a boxing ring, but if it were, small countries have shown they can land powerful punches,” he said. “And unlike boxing, in trade we all win when we play to our strengths.”
Referring to Turkey’s own development journey, Ambassador Turgut noted that success is driven not only by geographical advantages but also by “determination, creativity, and partnerships.”
He expressed confidence that Sri Lanka will continue to excel in areas of strength and deepen its bilateral cooperation with Turkey.
