Sri Lanka explores importing big onions from Egypt

The Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) is actively considering the prospect of importing big onions from Egypt, aiming to counteract rising market prices and meet consumer demand for quality produce.

In a bilateral meeting hosted at the Ministry of Trade yesterday (26), the Egyptian Ambassador conveyed a strong interest in facilitating onion imports from Egypt, signalling promising trade opportunities between the two countries.

Consumer concerns have escalated in recent months due to significant price hikes in the big onion market. Market insights attribute this surge to disruptions in the onion supply chain, stemming from export restrictions imposed by India and Pakistan.

As a consequence of limited supply options, Sri Lanka turned to importing big onions from China.

However, feedback from consumers highlights dissatisfaction with the unusually large size of Chinese onions, posing challenges for daily wage earners and individuals purchasing goods on a regular basis.
