A fire had broken out in two decommissioned train carriages parked near the Galle Railway Station on Tuesday (31). The carriages were among four that had been removed from service and stationed at the site. Officials said that the blaze was confined to two of the compartments. At least two fire engines of the Galle Municipal Council were dispatched to the scene. No injuries or casualties have been reported.

The Police Media Division said the Government Analyst has collected samples from the decommissioned train compartments that caught fire near the Galle Railway Station, and the reason for the fire is yet to be resolved. "The analysts from the Government Analyst’s Department office have reported to the place to identify the cause. They have taken samples but have not identified the cause yet. Within the next two to three days the matter will be cleared we hope," he said.
