The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has fined a bakery Rs. 200,000 after it was found guilty of selling expired bakery products.
The case was filed by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) after strawberry-flavoured cream buns bearing an expiry date of 16 April 2026, were found displayed for sale during a surprise inspection.
The bakery pleaded guilty when the case was taken up before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday (9), following which the fine was imposed.
Consumers have been advised to check manufacturing and expiry dates when purchasing food products and report establishments selling expired food to the CAA via the 1977 hotline during office hours.
