Unlawful inmate pardon case: A’pura Prison Superintendent given bail

The Superintendent of the Anuradhapura Prison, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department and subsequently remanded over allegations of unlawfully releasing an inmate of the Anuradhapura Prison under the Presidential pardon for Vesak Poya, has been granted bail.

The Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court granted bail under two sureties of Rs. 500,000 each and imposed an overseas travel ban preventing the suspect from leaving the country. The case has been scheduled to be taken up again on 4 August.

Meanwhile, a special meeting was held in Colombo yesterday (23), after summoning all heads of prisons from across the country. The discussion took place at the Ministry of Justice, chaired by the Minister of Justice and National Integration, attorney-at-law Harshana Nanayakkara. The discussion reportedly lasted for more than two hours. All Prison Superintendents, Commissioners, and Assistant Commissioners of Prisons from across the island participated in the meeting. In-depth discussions were held about ongoing crises within the prison system. Nanayakkara also briefed the officers on upcoming plans and reform activities related to the prison system.
