DIMO has completed the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a floodlighting system at the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC), making it Colombo’s second and Sri Lanka’s fifth cricket venue capable of hosting international day–night matches.
The SSC is one of three venues selected to host matches during this year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The project reflects the long-standing association between Sri Lanka Cricket and DIMO, which began in the 1980s when DIMO installed the country’s first stadium floodlighting system. Since then, the company has delivered floodlighting systems for four international cricket stadiums, including the SSC, accounting for four of the five such facilities in the country.
The new lighting system has been designed to meet international cricket and broadcast standards, improving on-field visibility, broadcast output and spectator viewing conditions. The system uses LED luminaires with a correlated colour temperature of 5,700 Kelvin and a colour rendering index of 90, enabling accurate colour reproduction and clear visibility under night-time conditions.
The lighting supports high-definition television coverage, including 4K and 8K broadcasts. Flicker-free operation ensures clarity during slow-motion replays and Decision Review System (DRS) reviews.
The project involved the installation of 630 LED fixtures across six high-mast towers, supported by a 62 km cable network. Each tower has a dedicated lighting control room. A DMX-based lighting control system allows centralised and remote operation, dimming and lighting effects.
Optimised mounting heights and optical design ensure uniform light distribution while minimising glare and shadow areas. The LED system reduces energy consumption and heat output and operates without mercury. Zoned lighting and dimming controls allow efficient use during training and maintenance activities.
DIMO Executive Director Wijith Pushpawela said: “From the outset, our focus was on achieving full compliance with ICC illumination standards while tailoring the design to the unique geometry and operational requirements of the SSC Grounds. Advanced photometric simulations, robust structural engineering and strict safety protocols were applied to ensure long-term reliability and consistent performance at an international level.”
The overall solution integrates lighting systems from AEC Illuminazione, high-mast structures from Transrail and power panels manufactured under DIMO Lumin. DIMO’s in-house Lighting Solutions team managed the project from initial design and photometric planning to civil, mechanical and electrical works.
The installation was completed within a four-month timeframe, ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
DIMO has also implemented an after-sales support programme, including routine inspections, preventive maintenance and diagnostics. Support services include software optimisation, control-system updates and periodic hardware audits to maintain consistent performance over the system’s operational lifespan.
