Sri Lanka emerges as top destination for Indian tourists

22 Apr 2025

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is witnessing a strong resurgence, with Indian travelers leading the charge. Fresh data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) reveals that 93,915 tourists arrived in the first half of April 2025, marking a promising rebound for the island nation’s critical tourism economy.

India remains the dominant source market, contributing 18,220 visitors (19.4% of total arrivals) in April alone. This reinforces a broader 2025 trend, where 136,535 Indian tourists have already explored Sri Lanka, solidifying India as the country’s largest inbound market. The United Kingdom follows closely with 102,273 arrivals this year, while Russia and Germany remain key contributors, demonstrating Sri Lanka's enduring appeal across diverse traveler segments.

The latest figures highlight a 9.62% year-on-year growth compared to March 2024, with 229,298 visitors last month. This upward trajectory signals restored confidence in Sri Lanka as a premier destination, particularly among Indian tourists who benefit from proximity, cultural affinity, and improved air connectivity.

For Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector, from luxury resorts to boutique stays, this surge presents a lucrative opportunity. With Indians accounting for nearly 1 in 5 arrivals, targeted marketing, visa facilitation, and curated experiences could further amplify growth. As the country positions itself for a record-breaking tourism year, industry stakeholders must capitalise on this momentum to secure long-term recovery and economic stability.
