Sri Lanka elevates shrimp aquaculture with high-tech, biosecure overhaul

13 May 2026 | BY Staff Writer

Sri Lanka has completed a four-year project to modernise its shrimp aquaculture sector, focusing on sustainability, technology, and disease management.

Led by The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and supported by Korea, the initiative strengthened biosecurity, introduced digital tools like the National Shrimp Industry Information System, and upgraded laboratory capacity.

It also developed a national strategy on aquatic animal health and updated best management practices for farmers.

Training for 640 officials and farmers, along with equipment worth $128,000, has boosted the industry’s resilience, governance, and market access. Continued collaboration will be vital for long-term growth and food security.
