Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) National List Parliamentarian M S Abdul Wahid resigned from Parliament with effect from yesterday (14).

Wahid formally tendered his resignation to Acting Secretary-General of Parliament Hansa Abeyratne.

In a letter addressed to the Chairperson of the Election Commission (EC), Abeyratne confirmed that Wahid had resigned from the office of Member of Parliament with effect from yesterday.

Following the resignation, the Acting Secretary-General formally informed the EC that a vacancy had arisen in the 10th Parliament.

The notification was made in terms of Section 64(5) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981.

The EC will now take the necessary steps under the relevant provisions of the law to fill the vacant National List seat.
