A collective of Sri Lankans living in Europe, under the banner of the ‘Ariyakammattana’ organisation, has taken steps to oppose a large-scale protest held on Wednesday (17) in front of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) Office in Geneva, Switzerland by pro-Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) supporters.

The organisation expressed its opposition by meeting with a delegation of the UNHRC. During the meeting, the Chairperson of the organisation, Ven. K. Ariyamagga Thera, made an appeal requesting the UN to establish a truth commission with the aim of restoring the heritage and historical rights of the Sinhalese as the original inhabitants of Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the monk is scheduled to address the UNHRC today (19), to elaborate further on the matter.

The large protest organised by LTTE sympathisers was aimed at highlighting alleged HR violations that occurred during the final stages of Sri Lanka’s internal conflict.
