The Election Commission (EC) stated that all necessary arrangements have been made to accept nominations for the upcoming Local Government (LG) Elections, with the nomination process beginning today (17).

Nominations for the election of representatives for 336 LG institutions will be accepted until 12 noon on 20 March.

Speaking to The Daily Morning, EC Chairperson R.M.A.L. Rathnayake said that all necessary arrangements have been made to accept nominations for the LG Elections starting today. "We have held discussions with relevant stakeholders, including the Police and District Secretariats, and provided them with the necessary instructions. We request everyone to cooperate so that we can ensure a peaceful nomination process as it was during the Presidential and Parliamentary (General) Elections."

The LG institutions for which representatives are to be elected include 28 Municipal Councils, 36 Urban Councils and 272 Pradeshiya Sabhas. The Kalmunai Municipal Council, Dehiattakandiya Pradeshiya Sabha (Ampara District), Mannar Pradeshiya Sabha (Mannar District), Punakari Pradeshiya Sabha (Kilinochchi District), and Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha (Galle District) are excluded from the election.
