The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils (PCs), and Local Government (LG) stated that investigations will be necessary into the activities of many PCs and LG institutions, as there have been numerous allegations of corruption and irregularities within them in the past.
PCs and LG institutions play a key role in delivering public services at the grassroots level in Sri Lanka.
Speaking to The Daily Morning, the Deputy Minister of Public Administration, PCs, and LG, Prabha Ruwan Senarath said that there is a definite need to address the corruption and fraud that allegedly has taken place in PCs and LG institutions in the past. “There have been many instances of corruption and irregularities over the years, and even audit reports have revealed this. Investigations into some of these cases are ongoing. More inquiries will need to be launched into several other PCs and LG bodies."
From maintaining roads and public spaces to managing waste and issuing permits, PCs and LG bodies are supposed to be the first point of contact between the Government and the people. However, over the years, many of these institutions have faced criticism for inefficiency, mismanagement, and corruption. There have been frequent calls for reform and stronger oversight, with the public increasingly demanding transparency and accountability in how these institutions are run.
