The Vehicle Importers’ Association of Sri Lanka (VIASL) announced that a 2.5% tax will be imposed on imported vehicles starting from 1 April , 2026.
Spokesperson Arosha Rodrigo explained that this tax was approved as part of the 2026 Budget and will not impact vehicles currently in the clearing process. The tax will be collected directly by Sri Lanka Customs.
During a press conference in Colombo today (13), Rodrigo stated: “Given the high value of vehicles, a 2.5% tax represents a significant addition.
For example, a vehicle costing Rs. 10 million will see an increase of approximately Rs. 250,000. Consequently, we can expect a notable rise in vehicle prices after this tax is implemented.”
