A 64-year-old woman was killed by a wild elephant, while walking towards the water tap situated about 20 meters away from her house yesterday (09).

The deceased was identified as a mother of two, residing in Tharanga mawatha, Sooriyagama.

Regarding the death, villagers have complained that the wildlife officers of the Minneriya National Park were informed about the presence of elephants in the village, however, they have not taken action against it.

They also complained that the officers declined their calls and sometimes, would refuse to come stating that there were no vehicles.

The officers had arrived late at the murder site and were confronted by angry villagers.

Therefore, the wildlife officers had filed a complaint to the Habarana Police station.
