BASL members to refrain from appearing for court cases today

16 Feb 2026 | BY Staff Writer

Members of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) are refraining from appearing in courts nationwide today (16) in response to the recent murder of a lawyer and his wife in Akuregoda.

The decision was made during a special meeting in Hulftsdorp, where the legal community expressed solidarity and called for urgent government action to end violence.

The four unanimous resolutions include urging law enforcement to arrest suspects, condemning unverified information, and emphasising the need for improved public safety.

This marks the first time in 14 years that BASL members have held a collective meeting in Colombo.
