A group of Buddhist monks and other protesters continued their Satyagraha campaign near the Ruwanweli Maha Seya in Anuradhapura, despite a court order directing them to leave the sacred area surrounding the Ruwanweli Maha Seya and the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.
The protest was launched on 7 November against the Anuradhapura Sacred City Development Plan. The group had attempted to construct a temporary structure at the site, leading to a tense situation with the police.
Following a report by Anuradhapura Police, the Magistrate’s Court ordered the protesters to vacate the area, remove the temporary structures and avoid damaging archaeological monuments.
However, the protesters remained at the location overnight. Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero stated that the campaign would continue until the Government withdraws the gazette notification relating to the development plan.
