Russian Deputy Energy Minister, Roman Marshavin, who is currently on a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka, has agreed to supply refined fuel to Sri Lanka during discussions with Sri Lankan officials, according to an official. Managing Director of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Mayura Neththikumarage stated that the quantity and specific orders will be decided during further discussions scheduled for today (27).
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake met with Marshavin yesterday (26) at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, with discussions centring on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. Talks were focused on enhancing collaboration between Sri Lanka and the Russian Federation, including potential partnerships in fuel supply, energy security and long-term cooperation.
Marshavin was welcomed upon arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake by the Deputy Economic Development Minister Nishantha Jayaweera, the Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Levan S. Dzhagaryan, the Additional Secretary/Europe and North America – the Foreign Affairs Ministry, M.R.K. Lenagala and Director General/Europe and North America of the Ministry, Sugeeshwara Gunaratna. The visit underscores ongoing efforts by both countries to deepen diplomatic and economic ties, particularly in the energy sector amid evolving global market conditions.
Earlier this week, Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said that formal Government-level talks have already begun to secure fuel supplies from Russia. Speaking at the weekly Cabinet of Ministers media briefing held at the Government Information Department, Dr. Jayatissa said that the Government is currently focusing on the possibility of obtaining fuel through inter-Governmental agreements and that the relevant Government-level discussions have already commenced. He also confirmed that Marshavin was scheduled to visit Sri Lanka, and that discussions regarding the matter are expected to take place during that visit.
