Heavy rainfall is expected today (4) and tomorrow (5) in Monaragala, Ampara, Badulla, Batticaloa and several other areas in the Eastern Province affected by dry weather, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Showers or thundershowers are expected in parts of the Uva, Central and Eastern provinces and Polonnaruwa and Mullaitivu districts after 2.00 p.m. today. Some areas may receive fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm.

Several spells of showers are also expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and Galle and Matara districts.

Meanwhile, the Director General of Meteorology Ajith Wijemanna stated that normal rainfall is expected from around the latter part of September.

He also noted that prevailing El Niño conditions are gradually strengthening and are expected to reach a strong level by October and November, potentially affecting Sri Lanka’s normal rainfall patterns.
