The process of obtaining the first Doppler radar machine provided through a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) grant will likely enter the bid evaluation process next month (August), according to the Meteorology Department.
“At present, Japan is carrying out procurement-related activities. This process will likely enter the bid evaluation phase by August, which will lead to the selection of a bidder,” the Department's Director General Athula Karunanayake said, adding that thereafter, Sri Lanka would be invited to sign an agreement. He further told The Daily Morning that Japanese experts have already conducted studies in areas where the best coverage can be provided through the Doppler radar machine, and that attention has been paid to covering both the sea and land areas.
The JICA grant provides a Doppler radar machine, which will be installed in the Puttalam area. Adding that it is of great importance; Karunanayake however said that Sri Lanka should ideally have a second Doppler radar machine to cover the Potuvil area as well. With better coverage of the sea and land areas, he explained, Sri Lanka would be able to obtain better results, especially concerning flash floods and cyclones.
The process, which commenced several years ago, had been stalled for some time due to various issues including alleged irregularities.
