Former Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) Ravi Seneviratne, who was arrested by the Police on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing an accident, has been remanded until 1 November.
Seneviratne had caused an accident on the Marine Drive in Colombo 4, and it had later been revealed that he had been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. The car driven by him had collided with a car, and the car had then collided with a bus transporting tourists.
He had been arrested by the Police following the accident; it was also reported that certain senior Police officials had been trying to help set him free. Seneviratne had eventually been produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court under charges of having driven a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and causing an accident.
When contacted by The Daily Morning, the Police Media Division stated that he had been placed in remand custody until 1 November.
Seneviratne had been in the limelight in the recent past due to his involvement in the investigations into the Easter Sunday terror attacks of 21 April 2019. Following his controversial evidence regarding the matter before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the attacks, several parties had been urging the Government to initiate a fresh inquiry with the support of Seneviratne and other CID officials who carried out the initial investigations.
