The best and worst of ‘Met Gala’ 2025

The 2025 ‘Met Gala’ was not just another night of glamour; it was a powerful celebration of culture, creativity, and personal identity.

With the theme ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ and the dress code ‘Tailored for You,’ this year’s event asked guests to bring their A-game by blending traditional tailoring with bold self-expression. While some stars embraced the theme with thoughtful, iconic looks, others missed the mark with styles that felt either underwhelming or out of place.

Let’s start with those who truly understood the assignment.

Diana Ross made a grand return to the ‘Met Gala’ after over two decades and it was well worth the wait. Her sequinned gown, complete with a dramatic train, was a dazzling tribute to her legacy. Designed by her son Evan Ross in collaboration with Nigerian designer Ugo Mozie, the dress featured her children’s names delicately embroidered into the fabric, making it not only stylish but deeply personal as well.

Jennie of Blackpink brought Chanel sophistication with a rebellious edge. She wore a strapless leather and satin jumpsuit, finished with pearl buttons and a cheeky skirt split that revealed cropped pants. The signature camellia flower detail made it classic Chanel, while the styling gave it a fun, unexpected twist – elegant yet bold, just like Jennie.

Rihanna, ever the style icon, stunned in a custom Marc Jacobs look that embraced her maternity journey. With a corseted cummerbund and strong silhouette, Rihanna proved that motherhood and high fashion go hand-in-hand. Her appearance reminded everyone why she’s a ‘Met Gala’ favourite.

Diljit Dosanjh made history as the first Punjabi artist to attend the event. Dressed in a custom ivory sherwani by Prabal Gurung, with a draped tehmat and a cape embroidered with the map of Punjab and Gurmukhi script, his look was both regal and rich in cultural pride.

Freen Sarocha Chankimha made history as the first Thai actress at the 2025 ‘Met Gala.’ She wore an eggshell blazer with black fur, a pink bow, and a long skirt with a thigh-high slit. Her outfit was finished with lace tights and a sparkly top, showing off Thai talent on the world stage.

Shah Rukh Khan, Bollywood royalty, finally made his ‘Met Gala’ debut in a striking floor-length coat by Sabyasachi. Paired with elegant accessories and a gold cane, he exuded elegance. His presence was powerful. ‘South Asian talent is here to stay,’ his look declared without saying a word.

S.Coups, the first member of Seventeen to attend the gala, arrived in a grey layered Boss outfit inspired by the traditional Korean hanbok. His modern take on cultural tailoring included a jeogori-style jacket, pleated trousers, and a black duster. With minimal accessories and romantic hairstyling, he embraced heritage with a fresh twist.

Of course, not every look was a success.

Several celebrities missed the mark with safe or mismatched looks. Pharrell Williams and Kim Kardashian played it too safe, while Anne Hathaway and Hailey Bieber opted for outfits that felt too casual. Joe Burrow’s look clashed with the event’s tailored theme, and bold choices from Lorde, Omar Apollo, and Gayle King lacked cohesion or modern flair.

In the end, the 2025 ‘Met Gala’ reminded us that fashion is more than appearance, it’s a voice. From Ross’s emotional return to Khan’s quiet but powerful debut, the event celebrated stories, heritage, and individuality. And while not every outfit hit the right note, the ones that did will be remembered for years to come.
