- First SL star to be ranked among world’s top 3
Shewon Fonseka has been ranked World No. 3 in the latest World Indoor Cricket Player Rankings following his exceptional performances at the 2025 Indoor Cricket World Cup, emerging the highest-ranked Sri Lankan indoor cricketer in history in the process.
The rankings, determined by player performances at the 2025 Indoor Cricket World Cup, place Fonseka among the world’s elite, with only two Australian players ranked ahead of him.
Serving as Vice Captain of the Sri Lanka Open Men’s Team, the 27-year-old produced one of the tournament’s finest all-round displays.
Fonseka finished as the highest run-scorer of the entire World Cup, amassing 193 runs in 11 matches, while also claiming 17 wickets, underlining his dominance with both bat and ball.
Widely recognised as one of the world’s leading wicketkeepers in indoor cricket, Fonseka has built a reputation for his exceptional glove work, making him one of the best wicketkeepers in international indoor cricket and the best in Asia.
His ability to influence matches through batting, bowling, and elite wicketkeeping has established him as one of the game’s premier all-rounders.
Fonseka’s cricket journey began at the age of seven at St. Joseph’s College, Colombo before progressing to first-class cricket with the Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club.
He joined the Sri Lanka National Indoor Cricket Team in 2017 and made his international debut against England a year later at age 19.
At just 27 years of age, and the youngest player in the Sri Lanka Men’s Open Team at the 2025 Indoor Cricket World Cup, Fonseka became the first Sri Lankan to achieve such outstanding World Cup stats and rise to World No. 3 in the global rankings.
This feat reflects his dedication, consistency, and excellence on the international stage, cementing his place among the world’s top indoor cricketers while inspiring the next generation of local talent.
