CEA urges public to avoid single use plastic and polythene during Vesak

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has called on the public to avoid using polythene and plastic materials during Vesak celebrations, reminding citizens that several single-use plastic items remain prohibited under existing laws.

CEA Chairman Tilak Hewawasam stated that plastic and polythene products continue to be widely used for Vesak lanterns, decorations, entertainment activities, and dansals despite regulations banning many of these items.

Authorities highlighted that commonly used items such as polythene lunch sheets, disposable cups, plates, spoons, forks, and plastic wax leaves are prohibited under regulations strengthened through Gazette notifications issued in 2017 and 2023.

The law also bans the use of polyethylene and polypropylene decorative materials at political, religious, cultural, and social events.

The CEA warned that improper disposal of plastic waste contributes to environmental pollution, harms wildlife, contaminates ecosystems through microplastics, and releases toxic gases when burned.

Encouraging a more sustainable Vesak, the Authority urged the public to embrace eco-friendly alternatives and celebrate the season in a manner that reflects Buddhist values of compassion and care for all living beings.
