The Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) has announced that university lecturers will launch a one-day strike tomorrow (09).

FUTA Secretary Senior Lecturer Charudatta Ilangasinghe stated that the association has been engaged in trade union action over the past week over the challenges facing the state university system.

He noted that shortages of lecturers and suitably qualified academic staff have become a serious issue, affecting the admission of students who sat the 2025 G.C.E. Advanced Level examination.

Ilangasinghe also stressed that improving the quality of the existing 17 state universities should be prioritised before establishing new institutions.

FUTA is awaiting further discussions with the authorities and has called for a permanent solution to the issues facing the university system.
