Have AliExpress, Amazon, and Temu abandoned Sri Lanka?

Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysingha clarified that e-commerce platforms such as AliExpress, Amazon, and Temu have not suspended deliveries to Sri Lanka, dismissing recent claims to the contrary.

He acknowledged that complications have arisen due to Sri Lanka Customs reinstating strict tax regulations in April, especially for Business-to-Consumer (B2C) shipments, which were previously allowed with minimal or no taxes on packages under 1 kg.

Abeysingha stated that mass imports of consumer goods under B2C channels led to customs enforcement on HS codes and taxation at commercial rates, affecting even small personal shipments.

While no current national policy governs cross-border e-commerce, the Deputy Minister confirmed the government is reviewing the tax structure to resolve the issue for Sri Lankan online shoppers.
