Treasury fraud probe: US Embassy denies FBI involvement

25 May 2026

The US Embassy in Colombo has rejected recent media reports claiming that a special team from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had arrived in Sri Lanka to assist investigations into the alleged USD 2.5 million cyber fraud involving Treasury funds.

“No such deployment has occurred,” an embassy spokesperson said.

She explained that, as is standard practice in many countries, the US maintains an FBI Legal Attaché presence at the embassy to coordinate ongoing law enforcement cooperation with local authorities when required.

The embassy also stressed the importance of accuracy in reporting, particularly on sensitive security and investigative matters.

Several local media reports had recently claimed that an FBI team had travelled to Sri Lanka to support investigations into the alleged cyber theft involving Treasury funds and a separate USD 625,000 payment reportedly intended for US postal authorities.
