Under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture, two newly tested pomegranate varieties have produced successful harvests.

The varieties, named ‘Mali Pink’ and ‘Lanka Red’, were trialed at the Ruhunu Plant Nursery in Ambalantota.

According to Assistant Director of Agriculture (Research) Mrs. L.G.I. Samanmali, the research was conducted in line with the recommendations of the National Agricultural Policy Council of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Department of Agriculture.

It has been revealed that these new varieties can be cultivated in several areas, including Hambantota.

Researchers note that cultivating these pomegranates locally could reduce the volume currently imported from countries such as India.

Furthermore, exporting these varieties could also open opportunities to earn foreign exchange.
