The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to the proposal to reduce the group insurance coverage limit for Parliamentarians from Rs. 1 million to Rs. 250,000.
The Cabinet paper in this regard has been presented by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs.
Approval was granted at the Cabinet Meeting held in May 2023 for the implementation of a group insurance policy, subject to a maximum insurance coverage of Rs. 1 million per Parliamentary year. Accordingly, the relevant insurance policies have been provided during the past period. The President proposed, during the Budget speech of this year, that the insurance cover limit of Rs. 1,000,000 be reduced to Rs. 250,000. Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the proposal presented to limit the insurance benefits for an MP to Rs. 250,000 from the insurance year scheduled to commence on 9 October 2025 onward.
