Commuters will be able to pay bus fares using bank-issued credit and debit cards on equipped buses starting tomorrow(24).

The inaugural programme is scheduled for tomorrow morning at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Center. 

It is being jointly conducted by the Digital Ministry and the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, under the patronage of Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake.

Minister Rathnayake recently stated in Parliament that introducing card payments will address the significant concern of passengers not receiving balance money after paying fares. 

He added that many people had requested the option as a solution to widespread fraud and corruption related to bus fares.
