Sluice gates of Rajanganaya reservoir opened amid heavy rains

29 Nov 2024

10 sluice gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir were opened, releasing approximately 11,800 cubic meters of water per second into the Kala Oya, as heavy rains continue to affect the Anuradhapura District.

The Wimalasurendra Reservoir in Norton Bridge and the Nachchaduwa Tank are also discharging water, with residents near Malwathu Oya urged to exercise caution.

Castlereigh and Maussakele reservoirs, which are also near overflow levels, have prompted hydro power stations, including Laxapana and Polpitiya, to operate at full capacity.

Efforts are underway to manage water flow, with the Angamuwa Reservoir’s sluice gates scheduled to close soon.
