One of the sons of Uva Province Governor A.J.M. Muzammil was last week in hot water over an alleged incident of assaulting a woman. While initial reports stated that the Governor’s son, Mohammad Isham Jamaldeen, was evading the Police, Governor Muzammil had stated that his son was not absconding and that he would present himself to the Police.
However, the Sri Lanka Police had issued a clarification last week over various media reports circulating relating to Muzammil’s son. Issuing a statement, the Police had stated that neither the suspect nor his father had informed the Police of his surrender.
Police had last week launched an investigation to arrest Jamaldeen following an alleged assault on a young woman at an apartment complex in Havelock Gardens, Colombo. According to the Police, Jamaldeen had allegedly assaulted the woman and she had been admitted to a private hospital with injuries.
The Wellawatte Police had investigated the assault following a complaint and launched extensive searches of his residences in the Kollupitiya and Keppetipola areas. However, Jamaldeen had not been at any of these locations.
The woman in question is reportedly a daughter of a well-known Sri Lankan businessman and married to an Australian citizen.
