The Department of National Botanic Gardens announced that the country’s botanical gardens generated over Rs. 1 billion in revenue last year, reaching Rs. 1.394 billion a 7% increase from 2024 despite Cyclone Ditwah.
The surge is attributed to rising tourism, with over 2 million visitors across all gardens, including the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, which drew over one million visitors.
Revenue was boosted by entrance fees, plant sales, and on-site services, showcasing the gardens’ vital role in tourism and the economy.
